Inspiration on a Gloomy Day

On the heels of a horrendous decision in North Carolina, and with rain falling in Philadelphia on men and women sleeping on grates to keep warm, it’s been tough to look on the bright side.

Fortunately, various news outlets chose to highlight the accomplishments of Gac Filipaj, a hard-working immigrant who recently graduated with honors from Columbia University. As a “late bloomer,” who graduated from college with other late-bloomers — including some Boomers — I always find these accounts touching and inspirational. Mr. Filipaj noted that he wished his father could have seen him go to school. I wish he could have, too, just as I wish my German-immigrant-school-teacher grandmother had live long enough to see me graduate. I’m sure, though, that the elder Mr. Filipaj would be proud…and, depending upon one’s beliefs about what happens after death, he probably is proud right now. And me? I’m thinking I may still decide to get a master’s, and do it by the time I’m 55.

Congratulations, Mr. Filipaj! Your hard work –and I’m sure you’re father’s influence — really paid off. Enjoy the next chapter of your life and studies, and I hope we get to hear when you complete your Master’s too!

About deb

Wandering and wondering - taking it all in -- and increasingly shaking my head. Who are we and how did we get to this here? And, what, where and how next? Putting what I see and think out there in pictures and always looking for other ways, hence, this blog. This blog, like me, is a work in process and still doesn't quite know what it wants to be when it grows up.

So glad you wrote about Mr. Filipaj. I saw his story on the news last night and of course it made me think of all my fellow McBs too. Yes, get that Master’s, girl!
